BusinessesExploring our Heritage through our Ancestors
Local HistoryFounded by George Van Etten, of Van Etten, Kaiser & Company when a sawmill was built and some 100 acres platted around the D & M. R. R. tracks here in 1872. Platted as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1931. It was named from its proximity to the Pinconning River (originally O-pin-cin-conning, Indian for "potato place"). William Reid started the first cheese plant here in 1911. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
